@joysn:matrix.org | Hello to all the free software users in Goa :) | 10:10:49 |
Praveen | joysn hi | 10:12:31 |
@joysn:matrix.org | is FOSS "big" in Goa? And India in general? | 10:52:30 |
Praveen | joysn: Kerala has good Free Software support, also in some states, but not all across India | 13:12:48 |
Praveen | Goa has a community for many years | 13:13:12 |
@joysn:matrix.org | And is OS used in a professional context as well, on a bigger scale? Like companies dedicated to OS solutions. Or are mainly servers used for web stuff or other networking stuff? | 14:02:39 |
Praveen | We have a govt funded institude (ICFOSS) in Kerala, but that has become just another govt department. There are many companies providing Free Software solutions and support like DeepRoot, Frappe, etc | 14:21:16 |
Praveen | I work as a Free Software consultant and make a living out of Free Software | 14:21:43 |

@joysn:matrix.org | Ok, sounds very nice. And i guess India has a big market in IT in general. And how is the acceptance of OS oriented people within companies which are not doing business around OS? Are OS geeks allowed to choose their system which they use for work or do they need to follow corporate rules and use what the IT of the companies allow? E.g. i have the experience here that you are sometimes allowed to use your system of choice, but you are then left alone with integrating that device into the corporate IT, which makes it most of the time fail. | 10:48:51 |
@joysn:matrix.org | i worked as a FOSS only consultant and developer too some 20 years ago, but it was getting harder and harder to just make a living from FOSS, and companies setup rules so that one could not easily participate in daily work anymore. Even though most companies rely on OS on core services themself and have special admins for those. But on the "client" side companies usually only accept one platform. | 10:52:39 |
