@corbenic:matrix.org | i understand the reason for accepting that, but what led the community to that ? | 19:50:31 |
@corbenic:matrix.org | i'm assuming historical mis-diagnosis and such | 19:50:57 |
Jez (he/him) | I don't know about this community in particular but it's pretty universal in most autistic communities I'm in | 19:55:41 |
Jez (he/him) | In reply to @corbenic:matrix.org i'm assuming historical mis-diagnosis and such This plus the general difficulty of obtaining a diagnosis in many countries | 19:56:24 |
@corbenic:matrix.org | i didn't consider that, thanks | 20:01:15 |

@corbenic:matrix.org | also what's up with identity-first language? i thought it was the other way around? | 05:53:45 |

Jez (he/him) | corbenic: what do you mean about identity-first language? | 07:42:50 |
moved to ijyx:cat.casa | identity first language means calling me an "autistic person" instead of a "person with autism" (person-first language)
Most autistic people prefer IFL bc PFL is stigmatizing and inaccurate
Stigmatizing bc it portrays autism as a bad thing that we need to be separated from. Many NTs who use PFL also say that the word "person" needs to come first for emphasis, implying that they need to remind themselves that we are people.
"Person with autism" gives me the same vibes as it would to call me a "person with queerness"
Inaccurate because if you're autistic, autism is inherently a part of you. I cant think of one aspect thats part of my sense of identity (personality, relationships, interests etc) that is *not* directly influenced by my autism. Autism isnt something i "have" but part of who i am.
Attempting to separate me from my literal brain structure seems ridiculous | 07:50:45 |
