Joshua Moore | Hello. I set up a matrix server a little bit ago. It's at matrix.leudla.net, but I'm not sure I did everything I need to enable federation. Also, what's a good way to host a room on otherwise static html? | 08:24:28 |
Maranda | Joshua Moore: https://federationtester.matrix.org/#leudla.net <- looks like the certificate is invalid. | 09:12:08 |
Joshua Moore | Hmm. I entered matrix.leudla.net, and it worked. I plan to put other things on leudla.net, and so I made the matrix. subdomain. | 09:13:23 |
Maranda | Otherwise, you need to just input the following settings in the Security Tab (element) "Who can access": Anyone, including guests (third tick) - "Who can read the backlog": Anyone (first tick), the translation might not be accurate but my UI is localized in Italian.
Then just join your room with a user from matrix.org, and you should be able too peek in the room from http://view.matrix.org/ | 09:18:12 |
Maranda | Joshua Moore: You can really just name the server leudla.net then using .well-known directives to delegate the requests to the matrix subdomain. | 09:19:25 |
Maranda | That's what you should do tbh | 09:19:34 |
Joshua Moore | I think I did what you just said, might take a while for the DNS to take hold. | 09:33:14 |
Joshua Moore | What should I make the SRV record? | 09:33:52 |
Joshua Moore | sorry, duh | 09:34:48 |
Joshua Moore | In reply to @maranda:aria-net.org That's what you should do tbh working on it. | 09:36:31 |

Joshua Moore | got all but the first one. This will require setting up a new server, and it's just about to be three in the morning. | 09:44:03 |
Maranda | Joshua Moore: if you add .well-known/matrix/client and .well-known/matrix/server on your website you don't need to configure SRV records | 09:44:25 |
Maranda | * Joshua Moore: if you add .well-known/matrix/client and .well-known/matrix/server files on your website you don't need to configure SRV records | 09:44:37 |
Maranda | Matrix will use SRV records only as fallback mechanism | 09:45:10 |
Joshua Moore | Can the .well-known/matrix/client just point to app.element.io? | 09:46:31 |
Maranda | Joshua Moore: you'll have to modify your Synapse configuration server_name directive into homeserver.yaml | 09:46:34 |
Joshua Moore | I tried that, but it wouldn't let me do that, something about not being able to reconfigure a running synapse server. | 09:47:04 |
Maranda | Joshua Moore: but then that also means probably having to reset your Synapse instance, so you'll have to leave all rooms with your current user and start from 0. | 09:47:32 |
Joshua Moore | gah! definitely a tomorrow thing. | 09:47:49 |
Maranda | Joshua Moore: unfortunately with matrix.org it's a bit of a mess to delete/rename/move things around since identity entities are permanent by the current design | 09:49:14 |
Maranda | * Joshua Moore: unfortunately with Matrix it's a bit of a mess to delete/rename/move things around since identity entities are permanent by the current design | 09:49:29 |
Joshua Moore | So can I just set up a second instance, and federate the two? | 09:49:47 |
Maranda | You could | 09:49:58 |
