 k1nk0z | lets say I run pfsense in a VM and keep a cold spare bare metal pfsense in the corner. Now the VM fails but I have a backup of the config. WIll I be able to upload the config to the bare metal install and it will work? the reason I am wondering is this: the interface names in the VM and in the bare metal install are different. Is pfsense able to detect this and ask the user whic interface in the config is translated to which interface in the installed pfsense? | 11:55:05 |
 narc1013 | I can't speak to this specific case, but you often have the same situation just moving from bare metal to bare metal. I did recently when I moved from Realtek to Intel NICs. It was no problem, although I may have had to tell it which interface was LAN and which was WAN (just a simple home setup) but I didn't need to do any more than that. Basically, I think the configuration restore expects that your NICs may be changing and has provisions to deal with it as elegantly as possible. | 16:41:54 |

When you load the config on the bare metal machine, it will detect that the nic assignments in the configuration file don't match the physical devices and prompt you to change them before it finishes loading. | 13:12:28 |
