@_slack_tomeshnet_U07L7M5HH39:matrix.orgRafsan Rahman Technically yes, but I am not sure where to start as my knowledge is quite limited about this, so any guidance helps 🙂 16:55:18

Hey Toronto Mesh Team! I hope you're all doing well! I'm Rafsan, and I wanted to reach out to this amazing community with an idea I've been passionate about for a while. I'm really inspired by the work that’s been done with NYC Mesh, and I’m looking to start something similar right here in Toronto — a mesh network ISP that’s community-led, potentially a small business, or even fully non-profit if that's what it takes. The goal is to provide affordable, accessible internet to everyone in the city, especially in areas where the monopolies make it tough for people to get reliable service. I want to make sure that everyone has the chance to access the internet at a lower price point, and in the process, help bridge the digital divide in our city. I’ll be honest — while I have a deep passion for this project, my technical knowledge in this specific area is limited. That’s why I’m reaching out to all of you amazing folks! I know the Toronto Mesh team is full of experts who are already working on making projects like this a reality, and I would really appreciate your help and guidance. I’m not sure where to begin — from getting the necessary bandwidth, to understanding legal requirements, to accessing rooftops to start spreading the network. If anyone here has advice, experience, or ideas on how to get started, avoid legal complications, and build this network sustainably, I’d be incredibly grateful. I truly believe we can make a difference and bring better internet access to Toronto. Looking forward to learning from you all and working together to make this a reality! Thanks so much, Rafsan
I did that back in 2002. I am not sure if that is possible in 2024. Back then any option faster then dial-up was a viable option. Today with 100M+ speed as a base, you need some serious equipment and infrastructure to do that. Back then 5.8 GHz links were sufficient between distribution nodes. Today, you may look into laser comms maybe?
Anyhow, good luck with it. I am looking forward to a progress report !

@_slack_tomeshnet_U07L7M5HH39:matrix.orgRafsan Rahman hopefully yes, trying my best for this project to be a reality, although, it's definitely a challenge. 03:36:29
@bkil:matrix.orgbkilIt depends. If one could delivery just enough Mb/s to allow streaming video for a family (a few Mb/s per device) for a really low price point, it should still help bridge the digital divide.10:31:52
@bkil:matrix.orgbkilAt the dawn of wifi, we had a WISP provider (I think in 2006) that offered a few hundred kb/s (maybe 1Mb/s) for paying subscribers but offered to trickle a little for free to anyone a certain time per day (maybe 64kb/s, still faster than dialup that many did not possess as it's costly).10:33:32
@_slack_tomeshnet_U07L7M5HH39:matrix.orgRafsan Rahman We are planning to start the prices from 15$ to 35$, starting the speed ranges from 10mbps to 100mbps (if that is possible), I have read the wiki at the NYC mesh, but I am really not sure how to get started, like how to setup the supernode then the corresponding nodes, and then get a fibre connection all setup, as I have seen TorontoMesh are hoping to place a node in Thorncliffe, I think there is a line of sight from crescent town which we can use to connect from there to here and possibly get Danforth hooked up, but I am really not sure how to proceed on this. 22:43:57

What kind of equipment do you plan to use between the nodes ?
16:33:04
@ekoslav:matrix.orgDalibor MilenkovicI kind of have a feeling that you are looking to make a business of it. For that, you will need to be registered as a internet service provider. As such, you cannot use ISM radio bands for connections between the nodes - you need to apply for a spectrum allotment. What NYC mesh is doing is not exactly legal (it is described as using the regular routers on roof). That does not work without modifying the router - adding high gain antenna, raising the output power - this violates allowed maximum EIRP. Since they are not a commercial endeavor, this probably gets a "blind eye" until someone files a complaint. Again, speaking from my experience. Also, if you think "Mesh" is shortened for the meshtastic, you are in for another disappointment, since mestastic speeds are measured in bytes and kilobytes at best. 16:51:42
@bkil:matrix.orgbkilJust one note. Maximum TX power is allowed up to 0.5W on 5/6GHz in many countries.18:56:29
