burke | Hi guys, I have a question... I've been using ledger for a long time for both personal and business accounting. What is practical advantage of hledger over ledger? | 11:00:29 |
sm | Hi burke | 15:58:03 |
sm | hledger is like 90% of ledger implemented more thoroughly with more QA and more ease of use | 16:00:08 |
sm | hledger's FAQ has more on this | 16:00:19 |
sm | also FYI these matrix rooms are not much used, you'll find more people in #freenode_#plaintextaccounting:matrix.org and #freenode_#hledger:matrix.org | 16:02:12 |

burke | Thanks, that's OK. On freenode I'll join through emacs and irc | 01:32:37 |
burke | Thank you for clarification. So I don't loose important functionality (I read about hledger add, it is very nice but since I use emacs ledger mode it is even more convenient) if I stay with ledger? | 01:34:01 |
sm | Well I’m biased but I think you do.. tabular balance reports is an obvious one | 01:35:22 |
sm | A good way to find out is to keep your journal compatible with both and use them both | 01:36:01 |
sm | hledger-ui is also a nice tool | 01:36:29 |
burke | Are you the creator of hledger? My situation is that I actually use both for personal finance and business. I've been using ledger now for over ten years I believe. But you know the grass is greener syndrome hehe so when I read about hledger I got curious.
For me a reason to switch would be if there is a killer feature difference between them.
Thank you very much by the way for developing it (even if I don't use it yet) | 01:46:10 |
sm | burke: ah, cool. Yes I am | 01:46:43 |
burke | OK, I will read then hledger's manual then. Hledger-ui seems interesting tbh | 01:50:24 |
sm | burke: as an expert ledger user you probably won’t care about ease of use/bugs but yes, check out hledger-ui —watch and is -M and import -f bank.csv | 01:53:54 |
burke | Thank you very much. I will. I don't consider myself expert ledger user though. Just long term haha I don't use many features. | 02:02:52 |
