bkil | enot, I'm not using that at the moment (and it's a drawback that you can't run Docker on an LXC or OpenVZ VPS), but have you checked out the examples? https://github.com/friendica/docker#running-this-image-with-docker-compose | 18:13:38 |
. | <Steffen K9> [xmpp] Please don't compare a large node with a single user or small node. Those two things are completely different especially when it comes to DB size and configuration. | 13:25:04 |
bkil | They also link to some more examples: https://github.com/friendica/docker/tree/stable/.examples/docker-compose | 18:14:43 |
. | <steve_beagle_d> [xmpp] well I really enjoy seeing users from irc, matrix and xmpp interact. I think it is a win for the community. and the problem with the bot and mentioning users is mostly a think of getting used to. nothing is broken in that regard. you just have to allow your eyes getting used to focusing a different part of a post. still need to look at how things look like for matrix. can someone post a screenshot? | 14:02:25 |
bkil | That would be cool | 19:22:56 |
Mel Syreth | It might be just me but the bot (?) is broken. | 14:11:34 |
| utzer joined the room. | 21:28:57 |
. | <steve_beagle_d> [xmpp] @mel syreth what makes you think so? At least I can see your message on xmpp | 14:13:58 |
utzer | I think netcup also has some well priced vps and for beginners Uberspace is also fine I think. | 21:33:04 |
Mel Syreth | It just posts empty texts but if I check the source the messages are all there. | 14:14:06 |
utzer | https://uberspace.de/en/ | 21:33:23 |
Mel Syreth | It is good to know you can see my posts though. | 14:14:41 |
utzer | VPS 1000 G9 should work

. | <steve_beagle_d> [xmpp] ping @bkil-bot | 14:15:00 |
utzer | Sometimes they have special deals, usually on Easter, Christmas and so on. | 21:36:06 |
Mel Syreth | Wait, let me check on the other client. | 14:17:48 |
utzer | There is also a search for VPS
https://www.comparevps.com/?mem_min=8000&disk_min=40 | 21:37:39 |
Mel Syreth | Okay, it actually works on Element (Desktop), I guess it's only my mobile client that is old and broken. | 14:19:06 |
bkil | utzer: Are you using such a plan? How many users can it serve? (2 dedicated AMD EPIC cores, 160GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 10.4 EUR/month for Netcup) Compared to Kimsufi, this gives a lot less space, but more CPU and RAM. Is Friendica really that CPU intensive? I thought that 2-4GB should be enough. Also, in my mind, I always thought that people waste a lot of space, but they rarely click around all day. I don't have data to back this up, though. | 22:21:12 |
Mel Syreth | I use miniVector on phone; it's small. | 14:19:33 |
bkil | guagua: Is this a test instance? If not, have you considered getting a non-dynDNS domain for it? | 22:23:52 |
Mel Syreth | I also want to run my Friendica instance but I'm kind of new to all this so I don't really know if I should pick shared-hosting or a VPS or what, and what the specifications for a small instance of a few users would need. | 14:22:25 |
bkil | Source: https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge/wiki/Settings#irc | 22:27:08 |
Mel Syreth | Well, both. It'd be my family migrating from Facebook at first. Their multimedia habits range from not uploading anything to being a photographer. | 14:49:04 |
bkil | Here are some more VPS hosting provider comparison services: serverhunter.com en.metadedi.net getfastvps.com lowendstock.com And of course for special offers: lowendbox.com | 22:27:17 |
Mel Syreth | No, just a private Friendica instance for now. Once I get a good grasp of it I might consider switching to something bigger but for now I only want it as a learning experience. | 14:52:05 |
bkil | But what if a given dyndns service goes bankrupt or changes terms of service (like having to require logging in every month, watching ads or something like that)? Happened many times in the past. And also if you're not the only one using the instance or you have followers, it will take a lot of work to change domain name every time. | 22:28:56 |
Mel Syreth | Alright, thank you. | 14:58:13 |
bkil | If you know a better (but still maintained) bridge for either IRC or XMPP, please do share. | 22:29:37 |
| bkilm changed their display name from alias @bkil:grin.hu to bkil. | 15:06:31 |
