@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermHistorically grown and diverse structures and strategies how our old and young institutes deal with data makes this beast complicated... 19:32:50
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasusame ... funny how we all are dealing with similar issues/challenges ... which is part of what makes this such an awesome community! 19:35:43
@pdurbin:matrix.orgpdurbin poikilotherm: yes, file permissions are tied in with the rest of permissions. 19:37:11
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasuthanks again both of you for the info ... i think i get it ... now to go read through the admin and user guides again to make sure I haven't missed anything else! =D19:39:06
@pdurbin:matrix.orgpdurbin poikilotherm: this issue has a bit about use cases for restricted metadata: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/902 19:45:47
@pdurbin:matrix.orgpdurbinBut yeah, not supported.19:45:55
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasuthank you, that is helpful, and basically the same conversation we've been having! we did also discuss the possibility of putting sensitive metadata into text files and restricting those files, so may do that in some cases, but ultimately we want to consider if there is another platform for some things :-)20:08:41
@pdurbin:matrix.orgpdurbinSensitive metadata in text files sounds good to me, for now. 👍️20:09:51
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasu👍️20:10:33
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasuone of the use cases brought up in reference to sensitive data had something to do with terrorist investigations, and my first thought was "do we want that in our dataverse"? it was just an example, but i do think there may be some cases where there MAY be a better platform (maybe not though) =D20:17:46
@pdurbin:matrix.orgpdurbin😀20:30:14
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermI see the use case and it seems pretty legit. 20:32:02
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermAlso I have to admit that we completely avoided this type of data: we do not permit depositing sensitive data, as we can't provide enough guarantees for such things...20:32:46
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermAny sensitive data should not just be hidden - it should be stored encrypted...20:33:27
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermIdeally with some zero knowledge crypto and maybe in the future with differential privacy...20:34:02
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermIt's a though topic though20:34:56
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilotherm* It's a tough topic though20:35:09
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilotherm* Also I have to admit that we completely avoided this type of data nor metadata: we do not permit depositing sensitive data, as we can't provide enough guarantees for such things...20:36:15
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasuagreed .. i don't think we want to make it a practice but it was a department within ASU that requested a solution ... we are leaning towards storing all of the sensitve data external to dataverse and just giving information to approved requestors (maybe via terms of use) to the location and just use the dataset for metadata, but wanted to at least have an option for some files within DV if needed20:37:09
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasuoops, no I guess we would would still need restrictions of some sort on just giving the location of the data .. still yet to figure this all out20:39:17
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasumaybe that would be the sensitive protected text file! or, we would just keep the metadata with an email address to contact for location of the actual data 20:40:47
@nightowlasu:matrix.orgnightowlasuso many things to consider20:40:57

@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermHi fellow Dataverse peeps...10:12:44
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilotherm pdurbin: a question for your knowledge about ancient history of Dataverse 10:13:08
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermI see https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/commit/f6327610f5b152b59eadd328ce46a5e92e7efbf510:13:19
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermBut where is this vocabulary for "subject" coming from?10:13:35
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermIn https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/commit/2948e6710b2c9a9dcae216bdcb0d9f1798f09a60 there is a reference to a redmine ticket "3900", but this has never been moved to Github, right?10:14:24
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermWhat was the source for this list?10:17:17
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermSherry pointed me to https://groups.google.com/g/dataverse-community/c/rpkfWoid-bw?hl=en11:42:44
@oliver:bertuch.namepoikilothermWhat a coincidence... 😊11:42:59
