Henry Musk | In reply to @forestjohnson:cyberia.club* I would be more worried that becoming a zombie and have the banapie being used by hackers to do really malicious stuff with from my IP than my data being stolen. | 15:06:48 |

forest (he/him) | As another example instead of WordPress, for my blog I use Ghost | 15:07:11 |
Henry Musk | However, what I would find very useful is running a bot does does useful stuff for me online. | 15:08:14 |

forest (he/him) | Yeah, you could make a matrix bot :) | 15:08:55 |
Henry Musk | In reply to @forestjohnson:cyberia.clubYes, that woule be really cool. But my python skills are beginner. Are there Matrix/Element bots that one can use? | 15:09:57 |

forest (he/him) | The org I'm a part of made a bot that's built from plugins (shell scripts) so its easy to add new commands to it: https://git.cyberia.club/cyberia/nekobot | 15:12:40 |
forest (he/him) | There are probably others as well but I don't know what they are called | 15:13:16 |
Henry Musk | In reply to @forestjohnson:cyberia.clubCool, I will check it out. Thank you. | 15:14:54 |

IMO this is very unlikely to happen, you shouldn't let your worries prevent you from trying new things. You can also get seriously injured or die from riding in someone else's car, or you can get hacked and have your computer join a botnet simply by browsing the web. But you wouldn't avoid those things just because they can be dangerous or have been dangerous for others in the past | 15:19:03 |
forest (he/him) | The modern server software really is good stuff. | 15:20:43 |
Henry Musk | forest (he/him): You are using Apache? | 15:21:27 |
forest (he/him) | I use Caddy | 15:21:39 |
Henry Musk | forest (he/him): OK$ | 15:22:39 |
Henry Musk | * forest (he/him): OK | 15:22:44 |
forest (he/him) | Usually all you have to do is:
(ssh for example, either make a super duper complex unique password or disable password with and make an ssh key)
| 15:25:36 |
forest (he/him) | ( and my note about ssh implies you wanna forward port 22 for ssh so you can log into your server remotely, if you don't forward port 22 you can probably just leave it how it is and not worry ) | 15:27:14 |
Henry Musk | Yes, an SSH server reachable from the net would be great. | 15:27:44 |

Henry Musk | forest (he/him): What exactly can that neko bot do? | 15:28:43 |
forest (he/him) | That's what I do and its very convenient. I recommend just disabling password auth in the sshd config file and adding your public key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file for the user on the server | 15:30:02 |
forest (he/him) | Just make sure to test that you can log in with a key successfully before restarting sshd with the new config 😅 | 15:30:59 |
